Canada-UK Semiconductor partnership
Canada and the UK have a strong and growing technology partnership in a range of sectors where both countries have complementary strengths. This includes semiconductors.
In January 2024, the governments of Canada and the United Kingdom (UK) signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering Scientific Research and Innovation. This aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation that delivers excellence and impacts across all fields of science, technology and innovation. The MoU outlines priority areas for enhanced collaboration, including semiconductors.
Canada and the UK have complementary strengths in areas such as design & IP, compound semiconductors and research & innovation. As the global demand for semiconductors continues to rise, Canada and the UK have an opportunity to work together to better meet this demand through R&D and innovation partnerships. By collaborating, it will help facilitate faster technological innovation and enable both countries to better stay ahead of global competition.
The Canada-UK Semiconductor partnership currently involves three main elements:
a visit by Canadian semiconductor businesses and RTO’s to the UK - 12th-19th March with opportunities for B2B meetings in Edinburgh on March 12, in Newport, South Wales on March 17, or in Cambridge on March 19
an Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme, including a visit to Canada by UK semiconductor businesses - 28th April-3rd May
a Canada-UK Collaborative R&D competition that will launch in the Spring 2025 supporting R&D projects between businesses and other organisations in Canada and the UK.
As like-minded and trusted international partners, Canada and the UK have a unique opportunity to strengthen their positions in the rapidly growing semiconductor industry by collaborating on R&D and innovation. This will foster mutual economic benefit, improve supply chain resilience and security, and drive global competitiveness for both countries.
